Fledglings: Montessori parent & toddler class

At The Bird Box, there's a particular kind of togetherness that's hard to find elsewhere - no phones, no distractions, just you and your child, fully present with each other.

Fledglings, our Montessori-inspired parent and toddler group, is built for parents and carers of pre-schoolers who want more than a drop-in playgroup.

Families who attend Fledglings slow down, get involved, and really engage with their child's play.

Fledglings Group

Our progressive curriculum runs across a full academic year, so children build familiarity, confidence, and a genuine sense of belonging over time.

It's also the perfect gentle first step towards nursery or preschool, helping little ones grow accustomed to routine, independence, and a wider community beyond home.

What to Expect

Each Fledglings session runs for 1.5 hours, led by experienced facilitators - including former Fledglings parents who know this journey from the inside.

A typical session includes:

  • Welcome circle - settling in together as a group

  • A themed PLAY cycle - rotating, hands-on activities built around the changing seasons, including children preparing their own healthy snack

  • Tidy-up time - an early practical life skill, done together

  • Story and songs - a calm close to the session

Our PLAY cycle is designed to nurture development across seven key areas:

  • Mathematics

  • Literacy, including language development

  • Cultural understanding, including geography and science

  • Movement (gross motor skills)

  • Creative expression (process-led, not product-led)

  • Sensorial exploration

  • Practical life (fine motor skills)

Why join a Montessori toddler group at The Bird Box?

With our Montessori-inspired sessions, Fledglings is so much more than your average play group.

  • Builds real independence - children are trusted to try, struggle a little, and succeed on their own terms, which builds genuine confidence

  • Develops focus and concentration - by protecting a child's play rather than interrupting it, we help them build the attention span that later supports formal learning

  • Strengthens your connection - dedicated one-to-one time, free from distraction, is something many families find hard to carve out at home

  • Eases the transition to preschool - routine, self-dressing, snack preparation, and tidying up are all practised gently, well before they're needed for "big school"

  • Supports whole-child development - across maths, language, culture, movement, creativity, and fine motor skills, all in one joined-up session

What is Montessori?

Montessori is an educational approach that supports children to learn through hands-on exploration, at their own pace, in an environment designed just for them.

Rather than directing a child through an activity, the adult’s role is to prepare the space, model the activity, then observe and follow the child’s lead offering guidance not instruction.

Every material and moment is intentional, encouraging independence, focus, and a genuine love of learning that comes from within.

Our Parents Say…

“The sessions gave me the confidence to help my son develop life skills and allow him to be more independent.

It has been amazing to watch his skills develop from these sessions and a joy to involve him more in everyday tasks at home.

It felt freeing as a parent to be encouraged to let him play in his own way at his own pace but also be given helpful guidance as to how to enable him to do so.”

“Bird Box sessions have been an eye opening experience to us in being resourceful and creative with play and learning opportunities to go alongside day to day tasks and chores.

We learn to appreciate quality stimulation and 'less is more'.

It was such a joy seeing my child engaging in developing his skills through play at Bird Box, and seeing his sense of achievement after each challenge.”

“Having attended various playgroups over the past three decades with my own and other children, I can honestly say I’ve never attended anything else that provides life skills and learning in such a fun, engaging and tailored approach.”
